Outline of Numata City
Numata City is located in the northern part of Gunma which is 125 km away from downtown Tokyo. Mt. Suzugadake, Mt. Sukai, and Mt. Kesamaru lies on the border of Numata City and Tochigi prefectures. The east side of the city is surrounded by the Nikko mountain ranges and Mt. Akagi. The more than 15 rivers including the main rivers such as Tone river, Katashina river, and Usune river, enriches the Kanto area as providing the water for daily life. In addition, it provides electricity, protecting us from fire-related disasters, etc. The city is surrounded by mountains which have variety of sizes from 250 meters high to more than 2000 meters.
The city has great natural beauty such as mountains, forests, plateaus, lake and marshes, gorges, and river terraces. This spectacular natural environment is one of the biggest charms of the city.
Numata City is one of the popular places for sightseeing in Japan because of its rich nature as well as hot springs, skiing, golf, historical places, and a variety of fruits farms as well as the Numata Interchange on the Kanetsu Expressway which makes easier to access to the city. The city is one of the largest suppliers which provides local foods to Tokyo area.
The city has an area of 443.46 square meters in total which makes up to 6.97% of Gunma prefecture. 80% of the city is surrounded by forests. The city is popular for making fruits such as apples, grapes, cherries, as well as vegetables such as lettuce, radish, and Chinese cabbages because of the continental climate which has temperature differences both seasonally and daily. Plus, the annual precipitation in Numata is low. Numata is well known for skiing during winter with high amount of snowfall with many well-known ski resorts.
Historically, Numata Castle was built by the Numata family in 1532 which led to Numata City succeeding as the main town within the Tone district for 300 years throughout Meiji period by Sanada, Honda, Kuroda, and Toki. It developed as a distribution center for agriculture and forestry products with the completion of the Joetsu line in 1924.
After WW2., the number of lumber related factories increased; paving the way for the gradual growth of forest industries. In April 1954, villages of Tonami, Ikeda, Usune and Kawada merged to form the town of Numata, and the municipal government was officially established. In February 2005, the villages of Shirasawa and Tone merged to form current Numata City.
Numata City plays an important role as a regional hub city which include social services, commerce, tourism, and other life services. It also also great sightseeing resorts with convenient access from Tokyo metropolitan area. Numata City has sister city relationship between Shimoda City, Shizuoka prefecture since 1966 as well as abroad in Fussen, Bavaria, Germany since 1995.
